New Orleans Syndrome?

28 May

I’m in the national guard, and i volunteered to go to NO(new orleans) with another unit from illinois after the hurricanes that destroyed the city. I was there for just over a month, and that was over 6 months ago, and I have had a stuffy nose everday since I first got down there. I’m sure I was exposed to all kinds of polutants. But I’m not usually the type of person who gets sick easily, but I’ve had this stuffy nose for over 6 months and it won’t go away. Towards the end people were tearing out the walls of their homes, and the streets were lined with fiberglass insulation, and I assume asbestos. My girlfriends parents said they heard a news reporter who was down there talk about how she’s had a stuffy nose for months now too. Has this happened to anyone else who was down there? And did it go away, or am I doomed to live like this for the rest of my life?
Also the 9 other guys from my unit who volunteered to go down there are also having chronic stuffy noses. And other than that, I feel fine, I just haven’t been able to breathe through my nose in 6 months.

What Is this an act of God or the devil? When a young family 30 years ago, prays for anew home and gets one…?

28 May

for a great deal only for someone to acquire cancer from asbestos years down the road from the insulation?
Problems such as these happen more than you think and it’s confusing!

Does this sum up high school?

24 May

High school is a failed experiment in preparing young people for the adult world. All high schools in the country were built around 1960 and were designed to hold about half as many students as they currently do. Nothing seems to work quite right in a high school building. The heaters only work during the summer and the air conditioning only works in the winter. The asbestos insulation has all fagged out and the building becomes an oven or a meat locker, depending on the time of year. The plumbing is usually a disaster in high school, with drinking fountains never working but toilets that never stop running.

High schools are usually poorly run by a team of out of touch assholes, also known as Principals, counselor, teachers, and ex-Marine drill sergeants (gym teachers). These people seem hell bent on destroying all hope for students through tedious testing, poorly planned projects, educational videos made during the Truman Administration, and text books that mention the Soviet Union on every page.

High school is also the place where the stress of growing up and the stress of fitting in join forces to destroy even the strongest among us. Most of High school is not spent learning but involves trying to find friends who aren’t complete douche bags, trying hook up with people of the opposite sex unsuccessfully, combing your hair, buying cloths in the effort that someone will notice you, working out so you will not get your ass kicked everyday, trying desperately to get rid of the zits that have taken over your face, driving a car that a homeless person wouldn’t piss in or riding on an over crowed bus while choking on diesel fumes, while people you don’t know make fun of you worse then your friends do, and on top of all of that, you must act like nothing is wrong in your life.

AUSTRALIA, NSW: Can we get sued if someone breaks into our house and is injured?

19 May

Details: We have another house that we own but don’t live in, it has asbestos in the garage. We barricade it but druggoes and teenagers always manage to get in, usually by breaking in through the back. They hold raves and god knows what in there. Can’t sell the place, and don’t have the funds to properly secure the area.
Question is, if they get injured there, either on the glass or sheeting, their own crappy drugs or even get a respiratory illness from the asbestos insulation, can they sue me? Taking into account the fact that theyre not even supposed to be there, and that I don’t have the means to prevent them from getting in of course.

Use Tyvek House Wrap over Dow Tuff R insulation boards?

15 May

I am haivng my house sided at the end of this week. They are removing wood shingles in the front and installing DOW TUFF R foam insulation boards, then the siding right over that. On all the sides, they are putting the DOW boards right over my Asbestos shingles, then the siding. Do I need/Should I have the TYVEK house wrap installed too? If yes, between the house and the DOW boards or between the DOW boards and the siding?
THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR YOUR ANSWER!!!!

I recently purchased a home with a crawl space. And have a question?

07 May

On the of the crawl which is dirt there is a white coating, I was wondering if asbestos was ever as a floor covering in crawl spaces. (maybe for insulation purposes)

Question for insulation workers or for anyone who has installed insulation.?

05 May

Hi, I live in an apartment that was built around 1967 thru 1969. Long story short, I was putting some screw hooks into the ceiling so I decided to take a quick look up into the ceiling crawlspace to make sure that I wasn’t going to hit any wires. I proceeded to lift up the cover and discovered a strange type of insulation that I’d never seen before that was underneath the (obviously) yellow loose fill fiberglass. This insulation could best be described as a loose fill type of material that is light brown to grayish color and you could definitely see the tiny straight fibers whenever you shine a flashlight at this stuff. I know without a doubt that it isn’t cellulose (I’ve seen that stuff before). So, I’ve narrowed it down to either rock or slag wool OR loose fill amosite asbestos. I sure as heck hope that it isn’t the latter or I am ****ed in about another 30 years down the road. Does anyone know if loose fill asbestos was used as a loft insulation in the late 60s in apartment buildings?

I climbed into an attic with asbestos!?

02 May

I climbed into my attic for the first time and was holding alighter to see what was up there. I probably spent a total of 10 minutes in there before I noticed piles of asbestos where on the ground for insulation. I didnt disturb any of the piles or move around much in there to create much air current. How big of a problem is this?

Can I use an Antique Boss Oven?

30 Apr

I just bought an antique Boss Oven for use in my cabin. I like the way it looks and it is the perfect size for occasional baking. I was looking up some old info on it and see in most of the ads that it has asbestos insulation. Can I use the oven AS IS? If not, If i can disassemble it, can I remove the asbestos, clean it sufficiently and replace it with something else and make it safe for use? Please let me know.

Asbestos in my new car?

26 Apr

I’m 15 and I just got my first car, a 1969 Buick Skylark Special Deluxe!!!!!! But something I was wondering is… I know that back then, they used asbestos as insulation and I can think of a few places it might be in my car such as in the air conditioning or on the underside of the hood. The car is all original (17,000 miles on the odo!!! or 117,000 idk)so there wasn’t any reworking done except for a little bondo (but that has nothing to do with it). Is this something I need to worry about at all?

what kind of home insulation was commonly used in the late 1800’s?

24 Apr

I live in a historical section in connecticut and reciently putting in sheetrock (we are removing the old plaster and lattis boards ) underneath we had found some unidentifeid blown insulation grey in matter; I was wondering what was comminly used back then and if asbestos was a possibility in home insulation back in the 1800’s
