No it is invisible to the eye, only way to tell is to have place tested, age of the building would be a little help though, because there is a timetable when it was outlawed,as far as symptoms no asbestos would cause health problems long term, it is found in alot of places buildings especially older ones as long it not disturbed it is safe, the thing is because the particles are so fine if left untouched most places will leave because removing it is so expensive. It was used from everything from insallation to siding on houses its all over it was used because of its ability to be fire proof usually before 1980 like i said as long as its not disturbed its ok.

Typically it is indicated by the year the structure was built. Buildings built in the 70’s and early 80’s have the biggest risk. You can contact OSHA with your concerns.. But be warned contacting OSHA will not make you very popular within the company you work!!

As to how you can tell, legislation came out banning the stuff not too long ago, meaning that if it was built after a certain point, which I’m not sure of, then it can’t have it. As far as symptoms, unless you’re snorting it, you’ll be fine. You actually need to get the material in your lungs, not just work in a building that has it. So unless you work in the insulation, or make a habit of eating wall candy, you should be fine.
