We had the acoustic ceiling stuff tested at a lab and it came back with ‘trace’ amounts of chrysotile. This means there was less than 1% asbestos. I have no idea if this is a lot or not. I understand asbestos is a cancer danger and that you don’t want to breathe the stuff. My question is how dangerous would it be to remove the ceiling stuff ourselves? We’d really like to get it out of one of the bedrooms, not the whole house necessarily. I also understand that you can pay to have professionals do the job, which isn’t really an option for budget reasons.
My plan would be to wet down the ceiling and scrape the stuff into a plastic bag and get it out of the house before it dries. We’d wear masks and goggles and gloves. Anyone know if this is completely foolish or actually reasonable? Sources would probably help with this answer if you happen to have any. Thanks in advance.

We recently had an acoustic ceiling removed from a home built in 1974. They draped the plastic and wet the ceiling, scraped it off and removed the debris – then replastered and repainted the ceiling. They also removed and replaced all the floors with laminate. Then we moved back in.
However, they did not test for asbstos and now I am thinking they should have. I have an annoying cough that has been present ever since we moved back in and I am terrified that I am being poisoned. Should I worry and what do I do now?? My husband claims the cough is from the off-gassing of the laminate flooring but there is a white powder all over the walls (my husband claims this is from the paint sprayer and not the acoustic removal) and I am scared! And coughing!
Please only answer if you know what you’re talking about. Thanks.
Hi guys, we are the AsBesTos and now we are going to play an acoustic version of one of our new songs “Lights, Camera & Action!” we hope you like it! and sorry for all the bloopers and laughs xD ha…
In this video, Acoustic Removed demonstrates the acoustic popcorn ceiling removal procedure. For more information, you can visit our website at http://www.acousticremoved.com If you are in the Vent…
Acoustic ceiling removal is known by another term which is popcorn ceiling removal. It is necessary for your home to undergo acoustic ceiling removal at times, because you may want to update the style of your home and increase equity if you are able to get rid of the old popcorn ceilings and retexture your ceilings. It also becomes necessary for your home to undergo acoustic ceiling removal because the surface of your popcorn ceiling can attract dust particles. These dust particles will then accumulate so that the health of people breathing your indoor air will be imperiled (particularly if the room occupants are asthmatic or allergic to dust.)
So out with the old , in with the new. But do it right – when trying to remodel your home, start with the roof, and proceed to the ceiling before trying to upgrade other parts that are lower down or nearer eye-level. The process of acoustic ceiling removal is called ceiling scraping.
Before the contractor proceeds to tell you “how we scrape your ceilings”, it is necessary to have him explain first “how we protect your personal belongings and furniture”. This is because there is a right process and a wrong process in trying to undertake ceiling scraping. And the right process means all the personal belongings and furniture of the homeowner has to be removed from the affected room first before ceiling scraping can proceed.
There are also two products that the contractor has to have to conduct ceiling scraping properly – a ceiling texture scraper, and a popcorn ceiling texture removal solution. In addition, you should inform the contractor if your acoustic ceiling was installed before 1979 because popcorn ceilings dating back to those years may have asbestos in them.
When that concern has been gotten out of the way, the ceiling scraping team can proceed to seal off the affected room with plastic sheeting stretching from the crown molding and extending to the floors. It is necessary to provide ventilation to the team with a window fan at the window.
A drop cloth featuring waterproof backing must be laid out over the floor. The team will then start spraying the acoustic ceiling surface with a standard garden sprayer to allow the surface texture to soften and allow ceiling scraping to proceed at a much easier pace. Be careful that the ceiling does not get sprayed with too much water though. The top layer of water allows dust to be contained as well so that it doesn’t get in the eyes, nostrils and other body parts of the ceiling scraping team.
The ceiling texture scraper will then be used to remove the wet surface of the acoustic ceiling. You may employ a putty knife instead for the ceiling corners, as well as the crown molding areas. As you can see, it is a relatively easy process though special care must be taken not to damage the underlying wallboards as the team proceeds in this home makeover project.
How To Remove Accoustic (Popcorn) From Your Ceilings Once And For All by Donald Thomas When I first started out in the home improvement business way back in 1984, Ronald Reagan was president, Boy George was making hits, Chevrolet’s Z-28 and Rally Sport was in style and so was acoustic (popcorn)ceilings. People just loved it and sometimes those acoustic ceilings would be sprayed with silver and gold looking glitter at the homeowners’ request. It was the craze all across the nation.
That was almost a quarter of a century ago and times and styles have certainly changed since then. Ronald Reagan is no longer with us and Chevrolet no longer makes Camaros, Boy George is now an afterthought and acoustic (popcorn) ceilings are viewed more as a curse than a craze.
Yes, times have certainly changed and for the better many would think. And when it comes to home improvement a lot of great changes have taken place and new exciting innovative changes have been implemented. Thanks to the ever changing technology that has made life so much better for us all…at least that’s certainly how I feel about it.
But unfortunately there are some artifacts that still linger on with us today and some are down right troubling to say the least. I have gotten many calls from irate homeowners who are just about to explode because of the condition of the ceilings in their home. Popcorn ceilings that have not aged gracefully and looks terrible are the scorn of many desperate homeowners.
White ceilings that have turned to a faded out maze color with dirt and insect bile stuck on it, and if that is not enough to ruin your day you look up again only to witness that much of it has already fallen to the floor, leaving empty patches that reveal even more dirt and stains. It’s enough to make you want to scream. But don’t, I’m going to instruct you on how to remove all that stuff from your ceilings once and for all. And the great part about it all is that it is something most homeowners can do themselves. All you need is the right information and the desire to get it done. So let’s get started.
I have been spraying on and removing acoustics/popcorn since 1984 and I have gained some valuable knowledge and experience over the years. I’m going to share this knowledge and information with you in hopes that it will relieve you of this problem and at the same time help save you a considerable amount of money.
PREPARATION
Removing popcorn/acoustics from your ceilings is really a messy job. This type of work has to rank #1 when it comes to ranking messy work. With that said let’s begin your project in earnest. First, remove as much as you possibly can from your immediate work area. Be sure and cover the furniture, drape the walls with plastic coverings and be sure to protect your floors with drop cloths that are made of durable fabric that will not allow anything to soak through. Remove window treatment, cover windows, doors and everything else that you think is valuable enough to be protected.
Make sure all electrical outlets in the room are covered and by all means make sure there are no exposed electrical wires! If you were unable to remove large items like tables and large chairs make sure they are covered and covered well. I will cover items three and four times just to make sure they are adequately covered. It’s just the right thing to do to protect us from potential lawsuits and legal issues.
Now that everything is covered and I mean everything, let me just say this as a word of caution. Acoustics/popcorn consist of asbestos! Asbestos have been proven to cause cancer. It has carcinogens that could prove to be fatal to humans and animals. If you choose to remove acoustics/popcorn from your ceilings by sanding or even dry scraping, you could open the door for all kinds of lawsuits and litigation that could possibly wipe you out financially.
POPCORN REMOVAL TECHNIQUE
Avoid sanding at all cost and remove it the safe and efficient way. All you have to do is purchase an inexpensive pump up sprayer from your local hardware store and fill it up with water. Spray the ceiling liberally but do not over saturate it because too much water can cause drywall damage and that can prove to be very expensive. So try and move the wand quickly and systemically to ensure equal coverage on the ceiling. Allow the ceiling to remain wet for about ten to fifteen minutes before you begin to scape off the acoustics.
Use a six inch or larger drywall knife to remove it. Note how easily the stuff falls to the floor once it has been thoroughly soaked. You really don’t need to apply a lot of excessive pressure. Just gently use the drywall knife to remove it and try not to gouge the drywall with the blade. Take your time and methodically cover every square inch of your ceilings employing this technique.
Once all the popcorn has been successfully removed from your ceilings, allow it to dry. And if there were some areas where the popcorn was stubborn and refused to come off; just reapply more water carefully and wait ten or more minutes before attempting to scrape it off. It will eventually come off just continue to work at it but do not saturate the drywall with water. Patience is the key to removing popcorn from your ceilings without causing further damage to your drywall.Learn More
LIFE AFTER ACOUSTIC (POPCORN) CEILINGS…GIVING YOUR CEILINGS A FRESH NEW ATTRACTIVE LOOK
Now that the acoustic (popcorn) has been successfully removed and properly disposed of you can finally begin to breathe a sigh of relief! Gone are the unattractive little pebbles that held pockets of dust, dirt and allergen. Gone are the cobwebs and those awful insect bile stains that you could not remove without damaging the acoustic. Good riddance. And now that the ceilings have completely dried from the acoustic removal process, we are ready to now ascertain some of the questions about what should we do next and how should we go about doing it.
In the article “How To Remove Acoustics (popcorn) From Your Ceilings Once And For All”, I briefly described how to repair areas on your ceilings that might have been damaged by scraping off the acoustics. And in another article I wrote ” How To Finish Drywall…And Achieve Excellent Results”, I gave a step by step guide on how to finish drywall. But in this particular article I will assume that you have read them both and I will focus on outlining a plan to help you achieve a nice attractive ceiling that looks beautiful and yet is very easy to maintain. If you have not read the two articles that leads up to this one, please feel free to click on the links and discover how it’s all done.
At this point you should have ceilings that are clean, smooth and dry. Although it has taken quite a bit of work to reach this step, you should feel pleased to see that underneath all that popcorn stuff–your ceilings don’t look so bad after all. But it is not finished and that is the journey we are about to embark on. For the sake of simplicity we are going to implement a plan that will help us acquire ceilings that are just the opposite of the acoustic/popcorn mess. We want ceilings that are environmentally safe (no asbestos), non allergenic, lovely in appearance and down right easy to maintain…for years to come!
And my overwhelming choice for a solution to the acoustic/popcorn ceiling is a light application of “orange peel” texture. Yes, this type of texture gets its name from its similar appearance to the hull of an orange. The fruit that so many of us love has a texture that is named after its hull. In essence, that’s how we get the name “orange peel”. Once it has been sprayed on your ceilings you should be able to see the close resemblance it has to the exterior hull of an orange; it really is astoundingly similar. Learn More
