We had the acoustic ceiling stuff tested at a lab and it came back with ‘trace’ amounts of chrysotile. This means there was less than 1% asbestos. I have no idea if this is a lot or not. I understand asbestos is a cancer danger and that you don’t want to breathe the stuff. My question is how dangerous would it be to remove the ceiling stuff ourselves? We’d really like to get it out of one of the bedrooms, not the whole house necessarily. I also understand that you can pay to have professionals do the job, which isn’t really an option for budget reasons.
My plan would be to wet down the ceiling and scrape the stuff into a plastic bag and get it out of the house before it dries. We’d wear masks and goggles and gloves. Anyone know if this is completely foolish or actually reasonable? Sources would probably help with this answer if you happen to have any. Thanks in advance.

The other day I was trying to extend an antenna and was holding it when the tip accidentally hit my popcorn ceiling. This ceiling has asbestos. It was built in the early 70’s and asbestos was used as a fire retardant. Now I’m scared to death that I’m gonna die from cancer or something. I know risk comes to miners and shipyard workers, but is it possible I could get cancer from just barely touching it and having the fibers released? It has to have happened before, hasn’t it? I mean am I the only one in my whole apartment complex (200 apartments or so) that has touched the ceiling by accident? Am I doomed? PLEASE HELP! I’m really scared and appreciate any answers. Thanks guys

The ceiling is not tiled or anything, just flat like the walls. There is a leak in the ceiling from the roof. I went to get a pot to put it under the leakage and a drip of water splashed into my eye. So now I am worried. Could there be any asbestos in the ceiling? Do all houses have asbestos? I am not sure when this house was built because I am renting.
And could I now have cancer because of that?
I’m so scared!
Serious answers please! So please only answer if you know!
Thanks a lot!

Is anyone familiar enough with asbestos to know if this ceiling tile contains them:

It is clearly damaged and need to be removed if it does.
Thanks.

The house was built in 1980 so theres a chance they didn’t use wherehoused, banned materials; however we’ve been told that some builders used up stock piles.
We are having a sample tested tomorrow at an EPA approved lab.
We do not want to hurt the environment, our neighborhood OR ourselves and that is why I asked if there was a SAFE way to DIY.
I hear pros use a negative pressure airflow machine or such and contain the room to itself with heavey 6mm plastic sheeting, but I just wanted to know if you can do all that yourself.
Also, it is legal to DIY in our state.

I have moved into an old 1950s house with the 12×12 glued ceiling tiles. I don’t know if they contain asbestos, but I am not planning on removing them. I want to cover them with 3/8″ drywall. How much should labor and materials cost for a total of 800 square feet?

These ceiling tiles are interconnected to each other on 3 sides 4th side is nailed and they are in my basement. The house was built in mid 40’s. I do not know when these tiles were installed. I purchased the house 4 years ago. Thanks in advance.

We have a very small bathroom with a popcorn ceiling. I’d like to remove the popcorn. House was built in 1986. Is there still a possibility the ceiling contains asbestos?

I had my ceiling tested for asbestos and it came back positive with a 2% content. The lab that did the testing told me the EPA says not to mess with it unless it’s 1% or less. Is the EPA simply being excessively careful or is that extra 1% actually make a difference? I’d remove the ceiling myself with the “do it yourself” technique without any regard for myself, however, I have a wife and 3 children whom I’d rather not foolishly endanger.
