I’m not sure how much exposure to asbestos is bad for you. I was breathing the dust in for AT LEAST 2 days. That’s the only form of asbestos I was ever exposed to, as far as I know. Am I now at risk for asbestos-related illness? I’m very nervous about this.

My father went in for endoscopy and GI ultrasound. He has been, for a few weeks, complaining of stomach pain, pain upon eating/drinking water, and constant belching. Endoscopy unveiled a decent size tumor in his stomach, which is currently occupying space in his stomach, and explains his discomfort upon eating/drinking. Ultrasound also showed the mass, but no apparent spread of mass beyond his stomach (I believe). They did a biopsy and CT and we are anxiously waiting for results next week. He has a hx of stomach ulcers, nothing else…
Obviously I am quite worried that this may be malignant. If you or know someone who had a benign OR malignant tumor with similar signs/symptoms, please share your thoughts. I am praying and hoping that it is benign. Thanks!
Marie, thank you sharing your father’s experience. Your info is invaluable; 2 questions if you don’t mind: 1) most MDs recommend surgery (part or whole stomach removal). The Mayo Clinic tx your father with gleevec in lieu of surgery is truly remarkable. A true leap of faith your family and father took.
2) What symptoms, if any, did your father have?
Thanks!

A sign has suddenly popped up in the private hospital where I work as a nurse. It is apparently in the cellar area where all of the patients food is kept. I was wondering if this is a health risk only for any builders in that area, or could it be a risk for the food being kept down there also? or people going into that area to work?

I want to be there as a friend to help her get through this and I also want to be there to see if there is something that we can do for her Mom-they opened her up yesterday and then told them she has stage 3 lung cancer and they couldn’t remove anything. What is her Mother’s chances-and what should we be doing to get her to the right doctors?

I was interested in purchasing a property where the railroad was litterally outside my yard or in this case the terrace.
Its such a sweet deal but as with anything in life, there is always a price to pay. In this case, I fear it would be my health. The fact that asbestos was a common material for just about everything, it concerns me to purchase property so close to the railroad. At first, I didn’t think I could get used to the noise, but a major power line plus railroad tracks which would face the center of the apt freaks me out b/c of the possibility of developing a serious disease.
In the city any pce of land is prime but at what costs. Its sad that developers do not disclose this information to you and you only have the opportunity to do an inspection when you’re in contract.
After 9/11, a rep from DEP or was it the EPA stated the air quality was safe. Unfortunately, she developed serious lung conditions and admitted years later the air quality really wasn’t safe.
Asbestos starts life as a mineral found in certain rocks, mainly in South America. It is fibrous in nature and has fire retardant properties. Asbestos has been widely used as a building material for over 100 years. It can be found in cement pipes and sheets as a reinforcing agent. These asbestos cement products can be found in many schools, factories and homes. Asbestos was also used to make floor tiles and as insulation lagging on hot water pipes.
Over the past 20 -30 years researchers and medical opinion has united against any asbestos use at all. Asbestos containing materials let asbestos fibers off into the air. These fibers lodge in the lungs of people working and living in the building and cause a disease called asbestosis, or mesothelioma.
Mesothelioma is an incurable cancer of the lung. It only takes one asbestos fiber in the lung to cause asbestosis. Asbestos workers are the people most affected by asbestosis and mesothelioma. People who worked in construction and ship building in the 1950s and 1960s are also commonly affected.
The detection and removal of asbestos from buildings is a specialized task, which must only be carried out by licensed contractors.
The untrained individual may have suspicions whether or not asbestos is present in a material, but laboratory analysis is the only way to be certain. This is expensive, and many employers will have to be cajoled into having an asbestos survey carried out.
If asbestos is found then the removal is very expensive. Employers sometimes employ non-specialists to rip out the offending material, before even testing for asbestos. The old floor tiles or pipes can then just be dumped, without the extra expense of taking it to a licensed asbestos disposal site. While all this is happening, if asbestos is present, the air in the building is full of tiny asbestos fibers, all getting into the lungs of people working there.
There are regulations governing what kind of bags can be used to dispose of asbestos waste and where those bags are taken. All workers must be fully protected from asbestos fibers while working. The affected parts of the building will be sealed while the work is in progress.
Asbestos has been replaced as a building material, and as a filler or reinforcing agent, by glass fiber and rock wool. Both materials have many of the properties asbestos has, but are generally considered less harmful.
Asbestos, found in mines throughout the world, is the main cause of the cancer mesothelioma. When the deadly microscopic fibers are breathed in, asbestos becomes lodged in the lungs, causing the d…
We had a flooding problem and had to pull a very old carpet out. Underneath we found 9×9 tiles, probably containing asbestos.A few of the tiles broke in the process and also some tiles are cracked probably from tacking the carpet down.Currently we use the room for storage and my hudbands clothes, but eventually we like to use it for living again. What is the safest and most inexpensive way to deal with that floor. We will not take the tiles out.How big is the danger of Asbestos exposure right now?
