What is involved with removing asbestos from a room?

13 May

We had some water damage in one of the bedrooms of our home, due to the fact the landlord neglected to fix the moss covered roof until part of the ceiling actually caved in.

The roof has since been replaced, but we’ve been told they will have to “gut” the one bedroom because they found asbestos in the ceiling. There is not any in the other rooms, so they are only re-doing the one room. I realize this may take a few days, and that they usually have to quarantine anything having to do with potentially hazardous asbestos exposure.

What I want to know is will we have to vacate the home while they do this? Since it is only the one room that is the problem, does that affect the others?

I am primarily concerned because we do have one indoor cat and I want to know if I need to be concerned with relocating her for the time it takes to do the repair. We are not concerned with the noise during the work or anything, just what might be required of us.

Any ideas?
We are getting our carpets replaced as well.
At the moment, we are in no position to move…or else we would have done just that.

Might have inhaled asbestos while removing popcorn ceiling?

05 Apr

Hello, I recently helped remove a “popcorn” ceiling. We got it wet and simply scraped it off. It did get a bit dusty in there so there was some inhalation for only a few hours and I had a dust mask for about half the time maybe less. Is this an amount of asbestos exposure to be worried about? I am unsure of the age of the home
no no no there is not any immediate pain or anything emergency related just inhaled a bit of dust from workin a few days back and am wondering if it is something I should be concerned with.
I guess no one is reading the question properly >.< I’m not asking if it was asbestos I’m asking if it was which I don’t know if it is then how bad can the few hours of mild exposure be?
ok care bear so just a minor infection and that even has a small chance? I was worried that it would lead to mesothelioma, would once for a few hours of scraping a popcorn ceiling raise your risk factor that much?

what counter-top water filter is best for removing broad range contaminants?

27 Mar

My area has really bad water, in some cases the city water even has shown asbestos. I get water delivered but am now learning that the #7 plastic it comes in is suspect. Also its expensive.

QUESTION: what counter-top water filter system is best for removing serious contaminates like pcbs and asbestos, lead, etc. Those pitcher-filters as I understand it only improve taste and 2-3 other contaminates, which is not enough for my needs.
On doing research there are 9383838 counter-top filter systems for sale but I am kind of lost trying to find out which one is BEST at REMOVING CONTAMINATES.
thanks.
cost isnt really an issue. i need water every day etc.
oh ya i rent i cant modify my kitchen or do giant setups

removing asbestos from a house roof?

22 Mar

I had a roof removed recently. It was an old cement asbestos roof. When finished the Air Quality Company came in and measured the following:

Total time: 80 minutes
Flow rate: 15/15
Volume 1200
Fiber/CC: .003

Can someone explain what this means? Thanks

Removing carpet over asbestos tile?

10 Mar

Hi,

We are hoping the install wood laminate in our family room (the house was built in 1979). When we pulled up the carpet, we found old tile and was told that it is most likely asbestos tile. The carpet tacks were nailed in pretty deep. Should we be concerned about pulling up the old carpet tacks?

Thanks for any advice,
Stacy

Removing black tar substance (mastic) from concrete floor?

10 Mar

Beneath the carpet pad is black tar substance(No asbestos found in sample) on the concrete floor. 95% of the floor is cover with it. How do I remove it?
Also, does the whole concrete surface need to be free of black glue before installing engineered wood using the glueing method? I have Bostic Best glue.
