Does anyone have any experience with inflammatory bowel disease in their dog?

06 Jun

My dog has a preliminary diagnosis of IBD and is being tested for intestinal lymphosarcoma (cancer) in 3 days. He’s been on prednisone for 3-1/2 days now and I don’t feel he’s getting much better. Any personal stories would be appreciated, good or bad.

Do you believe if a scientist discovers an existing gene that it should become their employers property?

03 Jun

In May, the ACLU announced that it was suing to invalidate a patent that covers testing for genetic variants associated with breast cancer. The suit targeted Myriad Genetics, which licenses the patent, and the University of Utah officials that licensed it to them, but also targets the US Patent and Trademark Office, which allowed this form of gene patent in the first place. In a move that surprised no one, each of the three defendants filed motions to have the case against them thrown out. The judge overseeing the case, Robert Sweet, has now dismissed these motions, allowing the case to go forward.

Our earlier coverage described the scientific background of the case in detail. In brief, researchers at the University of Utah identified two genes, BRCA1 and BRCA2, that are mutated in many families that have high incidences of breast and ovarian cancer. The University patented the use of this information for medical testing, and has licensed the patents to Myriad Genetics. The company has since attempted to prevent academic researchers that sequenced these genes in the course of their research from revealing the implications of the results to their patients.

Is it safe to live next door to a house that is having asbestos removed from their house?

31 May

Our houses are right next to each other (attached).

I heard that asbestos is only harmful when they are being removed and that the particles travel through the air…

Asbestos in Victor Bombers and their like 1960’s?

27 May

I have contracted an asbestos related tumour which am informed was dormant and could have been inhaled over 40 years ago.I was the second person on site when an Victor bomber crashed on take off in 1962 I spent over two hours at this site with all debris and chemicals etc but wasn’t aware if this could have been where I may have got Mesothelioma.
I served many years in the Royal Air Force joining at age 15 But my trade was Telegraphist.
It just happened that this crash happened as I was coming off duty in Akrotiri.
I have never worked with this stuff knowlngly but do know that RAF Cosford Billets were heated and lagged with asbestos etc and I spent almost two years in such accomodation also at Bletchley where the heating was sparse to say the least and tug of war between us and the displaced people trying to survive at this time.Any help would be most appreciated

Why do ferrets lose their hair when they develop some cancers?

25 May

I know some idiot is going to try to post an answer about chemotherapy, but to that idiot: ferrets lose their hair anyway.

In my experience, insulinomas (cancers of the beta-cells of the pancreas) and adrenal tumors cause ferrets to lose their hair. Insulinomas seem to cause hair loss much faster than adrenal tumors, and when adrenal tumors are removed, hair loss appears to stop and often hair grows back. Hair loss almost always starts at the base of the tail and near the navel.

I asked a professor why this is so, and she speculated it was a dietary thing. Insulinomas affect the production of insulin, and adrenal tumors affect the production of adrenaline and noradrenaline (obviously). She went into detail about how the effect on adrenaline / noradrenaline had an effect on the growth of of cells that are quickly replaced, like the lining of the stomach, and thought it might have also affect other rapidly reproduced cells, like those in the hair follicles. She speculated that insulinomas may also have some sort of dietary effect, but she said she could not be sure about either case as she had never studied it.

I have never heard of another animal that has such high incidents of cancer (some studies suggest ferrets are given a 50% chance from birth of dying from cancers), and I have never heard of another animal that develops hair loss when cancer develops, without the influence of chemotherapy.

Why is this so, why do ferrets lose their hair?
Seems to me that Yahoo just put my question in this category, and I trusted their judgment. And yes, I do find anyone who automatically assumes hair loss to be from chemo an idiot. My sympathies to the people who suffer chemo-induced hair loss, but chemo is not the only thing that causes hair loss and anyone who thinks otherwise is, well, in need of a tightening of a few loose screws.

How do spirits get rid of waste, after they eat something? Are there food-eating bacteria in their stomach?

24 May

Maybe they have some powerful fluid that sits in their stomach and dissipates any food or drink particles that it comes into contact with.

Can someone please put this in their own words?

14 May

Lung Cancer Symptoms
Up to one-fourth of all people with lung cancer may have no symptoms when the cancer is diagnosed. These cancers usually are identified incidentally when a chest x-ray is performed for another reason. The majority of people, however, develop symptoms. The symptoms are due to direct effects of the primary tumor, to effects of metastatic tumors in other parts of the body, or to disturbances of hormones, blood, or other systems caused by the cancer.
Symptoms of primary lung cancers include cough, coughing up blood, chest pain, and shortness of breath.
A new cough in a smoker or a former smoker should raise concern for lung cancer.
A cough that does not go away or gets worse over time should be evaluated by a health-care provider.
Coughing up blood (hemoptysis) occurs in a significant number of people who have lung cancer. Any amount of coughed-up blood is cause for concern.
Chest pain is a symptom in about one-fourth of people with lung cancer. The pain is dull, aching, and persistent and may involve other structures surrounding the lung.
Shortness of breath usually results from a blockage to the flow of air in part of the lung, collection of fluid around the lung (pleural effusion), or the spread of tumor throughout the lungs.
Wheezing or hoarseness may signal blockage or inflammation in the lungs that may go along with cancer.
Repeated respiratory infections, such as bronchitis or pneumonia, can be a sign of lung cancer.
Symptoms of metastatic lung tumors depend on the location and size. About 30%-40% of people with lung cancer have some symptoms or signs of metastatic disease.
Lung cancer most often spreads to the liver, the adrenal glands, the bones, and the brain.
Metastatic lung cancer in the liver usually does not cause symptoms, at least by the time of diagnosis.
Metastatic lung cancer in the adrenal glands also typically causes no symptoms by the time of diagnosis.
Metastasis to the bones is most common with small cell cancers but also occurs with other lung cancer types. Lung cancer that has metastasized to the bone causes bone pain, usually in the backbone (vertebrae), the thighbones, and the ribs.
Lung cancer that spreads to the brain can cause difficulties with vision, weakness on one side of the body, and/or seizures.
Paraneoplastic syndromes are the remote, indirect effects of cancer not related to direct invasion of an organ by tumor cells. Often they are caused by chemicals released from the cancers. Symptoms include the following:
clubbing of fingers-the depositing of extra tissue under the fingernails
new bone formation-along the lower legs or arms
anemia-low numbers of red blood cells and high calcium level or low sodium level in the blood
other effects-muscle weakness, skin rashes, and degeneration of the brain
weight loss
fatigue
low sodium levels

To those who have had their gallbladder removed…?

14 Apr

My boyfriend had his gallbladder removed almost 2 weeks ago. He still has the pain and heartburn that he had prior. Will this lighten up? He is losing weight now too. He weighed about 205 for a long time at 6′5″ tall. He had to watch what he ate and he weighed 199 on the day of the surgery. He weighed himself the other day and he weighed 196 with his shoes on.

Someone told him that their dad had the same symptoms and had pancreatic cancer and died after 8 months of being diagnosed. He lost weight and had pain in his stomach.

I told him that since he is watching what he eats, it might because he isn’t eating the same things. He also lost a couple of pounds from losing the gallbladder and stones. He sees his surgeon next week and will probably ask him about the pancreatic stuff versus gallbladder.

Did you have the same symptoms? Did you lose weight after the surgery? Did you still have pain and heartburn?

Your kind answers and prayers will be appreciated.
Thank you for answering my question and reading my story. No, he doesn’t have a temp and he is able to eat and keep things down. He just has a pain in the middle of his stomach and heartburn and the weight loss.

CONDITIONS CAUSED BY THE BREAKDOWN PRODUCTS

I. Methanol (Wood Alcohol)

-IS poisonous to man when it stands alone.

-As a constituent of other foods in nature, it is in combination with ethyl alcohol,

which counteracts/neutralizes the methanol as it is metabolized.

-There is no ethyl alcohol (EtOH) in aspartame.

-Methanol in not in “free form,” unless Aspartame is heated over 80O F. (as in warehouse)

-10% of the weight of Aspartame will be absorbed into the bloodstream as methanol within hours of consumption.-Methanol metabolizes into formaldehyde and formic acid in 12-18 hours after consumption. -Formaldehyde is known to cause cancer, accumulating slowly without detection in the body. – Methanol when heated above 85O F in food, liquid or in the body (98.6O F) is quickly absorbed into the bloodstream. (2 teaspoons is a lethal dose in humans!)-NutraSweet releases one molecule of Methanol for each molecule of Aspartame consumed.

Signs of methanol poisoning include:

Cerebral Edema Pulmonary Edema

severe headache labored breathing

impaired articulation

fainting back pain

lethargy abdominal pain (Pancreatic inflammation)

visual loss Leg cramps

confusion Enlargement of heart muscleParathesias (Numbing, prickling, and shooting pain.) *Visual signs are always asso. with acute toxicity and not chronic

Has anyone ever installed ceiling panels or planks on their ceiling???

28 Mar

I want to do this to encapsulate my painted popcorn texture ceiling (YUK!), which due to the age of my home (1928) more than likely has asbestos. I don’t want to drop down or suspend the ceiling too much as I don’t want to lose much height. Has anyone done this? I love the look of white tiles that look like pressed tin or white laminate which looks like hardwood planks, or beadboard – they would all go well in my bungalow. Do I need to attach furring strips to the ceiling first? It seems like the joists would be hard to find with a stud finder due to the popcorn. I’m extremely handy and know I could do this myself if I get a few questions answered first.
Please don’t give me details on how to remove the popcorn – I know how. Even if I was to have it tested for asbestos and it was negative, it would be very difficult to remove because it’s painted and I can already tell the ceiling underneath has some areas where the tape & bed is coming up on the seams – a lot of costly prep work. And the worst that could happen, it the asbestos report came back positive, when I sell my house in a few years, I would have to disclose that! I’d rather let it remain unknown and just cover it with a better looking material and increase the value of my home.
