I recently came in contact with asbestos tile I was trying to remove before I knew what it was.It was only a small area about 10 tiles most broke apart I only used a scraper on them didn’t notice any dust should I be freaked out.I left the rest and plan on putting another floor over top should I do anything before this such as a sealer.

We have really ugly 1960’s tile in our basement. Where there had been water damage years before, previous owners have ripped up quite a few of the tiles around the edges of the walls. Though carpeting is a better option, we cannot afford that right now. I didn’t know whether or not we could look into that epoxy paint that many use on garage floors, and if so, what we would do along the edges where tile has been pulled up.

Hi,
We are hoping the install wood laminate in our family room (the house was built in 1979). When we pulled up the carpet, we found old tile and was told that it is most likely asbestos tile. The carpet tacks were nailed in pretty deep. Should we be concerned about pulling up the old carpet tacks?
Thanks for any advice,
Stacy

An aunt passed, an offer was made that would allow us to live in her house and take over ownership so we began renovations. We are currently not in the best financial situation so we decided to do the brunt of the work ourselves. We removed old (25+ years) deteriorating carpet and found beneath it many broken floor tiles and green soft rotted wood below. We decided we needed to replace the rotted board, but there was tile on top. What to do? What to do? “REMOVE IT!” We thought. So we pried up all the tile with putty knives. After wards we decided to look online for directions on removing the adhesive from the floorboards and lo and behold on one website there’s a picture of our EXACT tile. Contains asbestos it says. So I was struck near panic and even though that was a month ago it still wells up now and then. We weren’t living in the house, still have our apartment, and just went on the weekends to work on it but I think all and all we have had about 17-20 hours exposure to whatever we kicked up in the air with the tile. Whatever dust there was I cleaned up almost immediately because I have allergies. We wore no face masks, no protective clothing, nothing – as I was completely unaware that asbestos floor tile even existed (yes I’m an idiot). I’ve found a few similar posts of people freaking out about unintended asbestos exposure via removing old tile, and my one and only friend in the world apparently did the same damn thing so I’m not the only idiot in the world that may have set myself on the path to mesothelioma, but like the title says, I’m frightened. We had the tile tested and it came back 93% Vinyl, 7% asbestos and the adhesive somehow has no asbestos at all. I know what’s done is done and there’s nothing I can do now, but how worried would you be?

I’m not sure how much exposure to asbestos is bad for you. I was breathing the dust in for AT LEAST 2 days. That’s the only form of asbestos I was ever exposed to, as far as I know. Am I now at risk for asbestos-related illness? I’m very nervous about this.

Our house has Asbestos floor tiles throughout. (I had them tested, and they definitely contain asbestos.)
The dilemma:
Currently these tiles are covered with carpet. The carpet is old and ugly and needs to be replaced. We want to replace it with Laminate flooring.
I’m worried about pulling up the carpet tacks at the edges.
Is there a safe way to do that?
Also, is it safe to put Laminate flooring over asbestos tiles?

Is anyone familiar enough with asbestos to know if this ceiling tile contains them:

It is clearly damaged and need to be removed if it does.
Thanks.

Just moved into a new rental and the house has suspected asbestos tile. The landlord offered to put carpet over the tile, but hasn’t offered to test the asbestos. Also, this tile is chipped all over the place and coming/breaking up in many spots. Can you simply put carpet over broken up asbestos tile? It seems like fibers can make their way through the carpet, especially if you use a vacuum.
thanks

Is there a way you can visually check for this, and if you know of any websites with pics or info please state, thank-you.

I have to install VCT in a church basement over asbestos tile. The asbestos tile has been waxed for many years. The tiles are well adhered to the floor. Will I have to use a wax remover to cut the wax before I put down the adhesive? There are also several dimples in the floor that I was going to fill with Ardex. Is that a problem?

We moved in two years ago and our inspector tested for asbestos – and found none. But the previous owners had broken up some of the asbestos tile when they installed french drains in the basement. There are no loose parts now and we’d like to cover it with wall to wall carpeting to create a rec room (we have an 18 month old). But now we have two problems – I didn’t realize these were asbestos, so now I’m worried about our health AND no one will install carpet over the broken tile! What do I do??

I have a basement that has a toilet and shower near laundry machine and sink and asbestos tiles currently covered by old carpet. I was looking to figure out how to redesign to fit in a full shower and remove tiles. The basement is small, about 10X18. Anyone have any ideas how much this would cost and how I go about finding a good contractor? Time it would require?
